Adoption keeps telling a better story than readiness
adoption keeps telling a better story than readiness: mckinsey finds 40% of large enterprises scaling ai agents, up from 27%, while deloitte says only 5% of organizations have processes highly prepared for them, and most pilots die before production. the bottleneck is not the model, it is the workflow nobody redesigned.
watch the companies that fix that instead of the ones that announce agents.
Context
Deloitte's survey press release of August 12, 2026 says only 5 percent of organizations say their business processes are highly prepared for AI agents, and just 15 percent have scaled orchestrated, cross-functional multi-agent adoption. It adds that fewer than half, 46 percent, of scaled adopters believe their business processes are prepared for agentic adoption. McKinsey's State of AI survey page, listed August 25, 2026, says nearly two thirds of respondents have not yet begun scaling AI across the enterprise, and an Information and Data Manager article of August 27, 2026 on McKinsey's 2026 report says 12 percent of all respondents report scaling agents in IT, 11 percent in knowledge management and 10 percent in software engineering, from 1,719 responses collected May 4 to June 8, 2026. It also says 54 percent of organizations with more than 1 billion dollars in revenue report scaling AI across the enterprise.
The 5 percent Deloitte figure is supported. The note's McKinsey figure of 40 percent of large enterprises scaling agents, up from 27 percent, was not located in the pages read, so it is unverified, and the nearest figures read are function-level agent scaling shares and a 54 percent enterprise AI scaling share for the largest companies, which are different measures that are not substituted. The claim that most pilots die before production was not located either. The two surveys use different populations and definitions, so putting them side by side is the author's framing. The bottleneck is the workflow nobody redesigned is the author's conclusion, consistent with Deloitte's process readiness finding but not stated by it.
