ai adoption hit saturation while trust stayed behind. stack overflow's 2026 survey of 30,000+ developers found 83% use ai tools but only 6.6% trust them for important decisions, and 78.7% demand source attribution.

the bottleneck isn't capability anymore, it's proof.

Context

Stack Overflow's press release of October 6, 2026 says the survey drew over 30,000 responses from 169 countries. It reports that 17.2% say they do not use AI tools, that nearly half trust AI output when they can verify it, that 6.6% are prepared to trust it for important decisions, and that 78.7% say source attribution is important or very important when evaluating AI answers.

The survey's own trust page (n = 14,304 answering) shows 48.0% trust AI when they can easily verify the output, 16.3% trust it for many tasks but not important decisions, 16.3% for low-risk tasks only, 12.3% do not trust it for most tasks, and 6.6% (949 people) trust it for many tasks including important decisions.

The source attribution page (n = 13,945) shows 52.1% call attribution very important and 26.5% important. The methodology page counts 30,903 valid responses, collected from June 23 to August 5, 2026.

How it compares

The note says 83% use AI tools. The press release gives 17.2% who do not, so about 83% do, a figure derived from that number. The note's 6.6% and 78.7% figures match the release. The 6.6% is a share of the 14,304 people who answered the trust question, not of all 30,000 responses, and the 78.7% is a share of the 13,945 who answered the attribution question.

The press release frames the result as trust shifting from skepticism to conditional acceptance, with nearly half trusting AI when they can verify it. The note's 'trust stayed behind' is the author's framing. Only 6.6% trusting AI for important decisions is accurate, but the more common answer is conditional trust.

'The bottleneck isn't capability anymore, it's proof' is the author's opinion. The survey measures stated attitudes, not capability.
