ai made code cheap and senior engineers the scarce part. software engineering is now 55% of hiring at major us tech companies, up from 46% in 2019, because someone has to catch the mistakes an agent can spread into every file.
the judgment is what's left when the code is free.
Context
SignalFire's 2026 State of Tech Talent report says that inside a shrinking hiring pool, software engineers now account for 55% of all hiring at the Tech Majors, up from 46% in 2019. It lists the Tech Majors as including Alphabet, Meta, Apple, Amazon, Microsoft, Netflix, NVIDIA, Tesla and Uber. It says overall hiring at the Tech Majors is down 25% from 2019 while engineering hiring is down 11%.
The report also says new graduate and entry-level hiring is down roughly 65% at the Tech Majors compared with 2019, that senior and staff roles are growing as a share of hiring, and that the operational bottleneck has moved from writing code to reviewing it.
The 55% and 46% figures and the 2019 baseline match the report. SignalFire is a venture firm and the figures are its own analysis of its data. The report's Tech Majors are a defined set of large companies, so 'major us tech companies' is right for that set only.
The 55% is a share of hiring at those companies and engineering hiring fell 11%, so the report shows engineering holding up, not growing in headcount. The note's 'senior engineers the scarce part' fits the report's shift to senior and staff roles, though the report does not call them scarce.
The note's claim that someone has to catch the mistakes an agent can spread into every file is the author's reasoning. The report says the bottleneck moved to reviewing code, which is consistent with it.
