azure's gateway services degraded in at least 18 regions from sept 30 into oct 1, and microsoft suspended maintenance after failing to pin the root cause, per oct 1 reporting.
the platform everyone builds on had a multi-region night it still can't explain. 1
Context
Microsoft's incident record 7Q30-010 says that between 20:30 UTC on September 30, 2026 and 02:15 UTC on October 1, 2026, a subset of customers using gateway services in multiple regions experienced degraded or interrupted network connectivity. Its investigation says a recent change to a regional gateway management service triggered higher-than-expected load while unrelated operating system servicing maintenance proceeded through multiple regions, preventing dependent services from scaling.
A mirror of the record describes roughly 18 regions and about six hours of impact across ExpressRoute and VPN gateways, Azure Firewall, Application Gateway and Azure VMware Solution.
The dates and the 18-region figure match, though the 18 comes from a third-party mirror, not Microsoft's own wording, which says multiple regions. The incident is about gateway services, not the whole platform.
The note says Microsoft failed to pin the root cause. The preliminary review read states an identified cause, a gateway management service change under load during servicing. The pages read do not show a statement that the cause is unknown, so that part is unsupported here, not refuted. Pausing maintenance is mentioned in a secondary report. 'The platform everyone builds on had a multi-region night it still can't explain' is the author's line.
