companies are about to spend $206.5 billion on ai agents in 2026, up 139%, while gartner expects 40% of agent projects to be canceled, per the september forecast.
the fastest-growing line in enterprise ai is the one with the highest failure rate.
Context
Secondary coverage of a Gartner forecast says spending on AI agent software reaches $206.5 billion in 2026, up 139% from $86.4 billion in 2025, and projected at $376.3 billion by 2027. Sonnet Code dates the forecast to Gartner's June 2026 enterprise software forecast, and AIWire places it in Gartner's May 2026 forecast.
Gartner's press release of June 25, 2025 says over 40% of agentic AI projects will be canceled by the end of 2027, due to escalating costs, unclear business value or inadequate risk controls.
The $206.5 billion and 139% match the secondary coverage read. The note says the forecast is from September. The pages read place it in May or June 2026, so September is unsupported here, not refuted. I did not find Gartner's own page for the agent spending figure, so the figure rests on those reports.
The 40% cancellation forecast is a separate Gartner prediction from June 2025, about projects canceled by end of 2027, and the note treats it as part of the same September forecast. The note says gartner 'expects 40% of agent projects to be canceled' while the release says over 40%. 'Highest failure rate' is the author's inference, since cancellation is not the same as failure.
