google just made a human factcheck part of its spam policy. the october guidance says it is critical to manually review all ai-generated content before publishing, after the august spam update targeted scaled ai output.
the same tool that flooded search is now its biggest liability.
Context
Search Engine Land reported on October 2, 2026 that Google updated its help document on using generative AI content to say it is critical to manually review and fact-check all AI-generated content for accuracy and trustworthiness before publishing. The quoted line is: "It is critical to manually factcheck and review all AI-generated content for accuracy and trustworthiness before publishing." Other coverage dates the update to October 1, 2026.
Search Engine Land also reported that Google's August 2026 spam update saw an 82% increase in top 10 URLs dropping out of the top 100, according to SE Ranking data: 16.71% of previously top 10 URLs fell beyond position 100, against 9.2% in a comparable July period. An SEO agency recap says the update ran August 18 to 21 and enforced the existing scaled content abuse rule, with no new policy announced.
The note calls the guidance part of Google's spam policy. The pages read describe an update to Google's guidance document on generative AI content, and do not say that a human review is now a spam policy requirement. 'Spam policy' is unsupported here, not refuted.
The note says the August update targeted scaled AI output. The Elevarus recap argues the opposite emphasis: that the update did not penalize content for being written with AI, and enforced the existing rule on scaled content abuse. That is one agency's reading. SE Ranking's data shows ranking volatility, not its cause.
'The same tool that flooded search is now its biggest liability' is the author's line. None of the sources read says that.
