gpu rental prices are rising even for last-generation chips. nebius raised nvidia gpu-hour rates 16.9-21% on oct 1, aws followed with roughly 15% on ec2 capacity blocks, both second hikes in three months.
two price increases in a quarter on h100s that are two generations old.
Context
GPU Economy read Nebius's own price page and reports that on October 1, 2026 the on-demand H100 rate went from $3.85 to $4.50 per GPU-hour, up 16.9%, with H200 up 20.0% ($4.50 to $5.40), B200 up 18.9% ($7.15 to $8.50) and B300 up 21.0% ($7.85 to $9.50). The Inference (September 18, 2026) reports the same increases and adds that CPU rates rise 25% and memory 41%. Reuters (September 17, 2026) covers the notice under the headline that Nebius hikes prices again.
explainx.ai reports that AWS Capacity Blocks for ML rise about 15% on October 7, 2026, with a single new hourly rate per family across regions, for example P5 at $5.970 and P5en at $7.895. It says On-Demand and Savings Plans do not change, and that the page does not contain a history of earlier 2026 updates.
The 16.9 to 21% Nebius range, the October 1 date and the roughly 15% AWS figure match the sources. The AWS figure is for Capacity Blocks, the reserved product, not AWS GPU prices in general, and explainx says some non-US rows jump more.
The note says both were second hikes in three months. For Nebius, explainx describes the September notice as the second hike since May 2026 and Reuters says 'again'. For AWS, the page read has no history of earlier 2026 updates and secondary recaps mention a quarterly cadence, so 'second in three months' is unsupported, not refuted.
The note calls the H100 two generations old. The pages read do not state that, so it is the author's characterization. The sources also show newer chips (B200, B300) rising by similar percentages.
'Last-generation chips' and the point about prices rising are the author's framing. The sources report list-price changes and say nothing on whether demand is the cause beyond Reuters' headline.
