the agent economy is running on agents that can't talk to each other. an idc report finds two-thirds of enterprises run ai agents in production, but most of those agents are disconnected and a quarter run with no monitoring at all, per oct 7.

the next bottleneck is inter-agent communication, not model quality.

Context

CIO Dive reported on September 25 that an IDC survey of more than 400 enterprise tech decision-makers, run on behalf of agentic AI company Leah, found two-thirds of organizations use AI agents in production, yet the agents remain siloed. An IDC deck says about one in three organizations has a genuinely cross-functional multiagent solution and fewer than half of proofs of concept reach production.

IDC's Agentic AI at Scale deck says production is the norm now, but rarely cross-functional.

How it compares

Date: the CIO Dive report is September 25, not October 7.

The survey was done for a vendor, Leah, which sells agentic AI.

'A quarter run with no monitoring' was not found in the pages read, so it is unsupported here, not refuted.

'The next bottleneck is inter-agent communication' is the author's opinion.

  • Look for the monitoring figure in IDC's observability survey before relying on 'a quarter'.
