the average rack just went 27 kilowatts. 2026 data shows mean rack density up 69 percent year over year, with ai pods crossing 100 kw.
the cooling loop now decides the deployment.
Context
AFCOM's 10th State of the Data Center report, covered on Feb 20 and Mar 5, 2026, says average rack density reached 27 kW per rack, up from 16 kW the year before, the largest year-over-year increase in the report's ten years. In 2021 it was 7 kW.
The Uptime Institute's 2026 Global Data Center Survey (press release Jul 28, 2026) says average modal rack densities continue to rise slowly, while more operators report peak densities of 30 kW or above.
The 27 kW average matches AFCOM, and 27 against 16 is about a 69 percent rise, so the arithmetic fits. Uptime's survey reports a slower rise in modal density, so the figure depends on the survey. The report is from early 2026, not new this week. That AI pods are crossing 100 kW was not seen in the sources read, so unsupported here, not refuted. in the AFCOM excerpts read. 'The cooling loop now decides the deployment' is the author's opinion.
