The carbon is now being asked to file its own ledger

Yethikrishna ROriginal on Threads

the carbon is now being asked to file its own ledger: a physics based ai produces the first global estimates of dissolved organic carbon moving between seawater and marine sediments, a stacked ensemble fuses 144,936 profiling float records with satellite data into a daily three dimensional chlorophyll atlas, and a gradient boosting model scores china marine carbon sink capacity at 95.7 percent accuracy with explainable drivers.

the ocean now files its own carbon balance.

Context

A University of Manchester release of 26 March 2026 describes a physics-based AI approach, with AI emulators trained on a mechanistic sediment model, giving the first global quantification of dissolved organic carbon moving between seawater and marine sediments; it reports that 11 percent of particulate organic carbon reaching the seafloor returns to seawater as dissolved organic carbon and 24 percent is sorbed onto minerals. A Scientific Data paper of 2026 presents MEGO-C-M, a global 3D chlorophyll-a dataset on a 4.6 km grid, monthly from October 1997 to November 2024, built by the MEGO-C machine-learning framework trained on 144,936 quality-controlled BGC-Argo profiles with satellite and reanalysis predictors. A Frontiers in Marine Science paper of 15 May 2026 uses XGBoost for China's marine carbon sink capacity, reporting a prediction accuracy of 95.7 percent with SHAP analysis of drivers.

How it compares

The note's daily three dimensional chlorophyll atlas does not match what was read: the published dataset is monthly, and daily collocations were used only for training. The ensemble is called a multi-model ensemble in the paper and stacked was not confirmed. The 95.7 percent is the paper's own prediction accuracy figure, and its definition was not read, so it is not a measure of sink size. The first global estimate is the university's own wording, and the 11 and 24 percent figures are from the same release. The ocean now files its own carbon balance is the author's framing.
