the chips are outrunning the grid. morgan stanley warned this week that semiconductors being produced already exceed the power available to house them, with us data centers facing a power gap worth about a third of forecast chip-sales demand by 2028.

the bottleneck is now megawatts, not silicon.

Context

Blockspace reports that Morgan Stanley's September 21, 2026 report raised its projected US data-center power shortfall through 2028 to 33 GW after accounting for onsite generation and other accelerated power solutions. It says the residual gap equals 34% of the 97 GW of incremental power developers will need to energize projected chip deployments, and that the shortfall before new power solutions is 57 GW, up from 38 GW.

The report attributes the revision to higher chip shipment estimates and the shift from 8-GPU servers to integrated rack-scale systems, with a Vera Rubin rack at 234 kW, up from 149 kW. A summary dated October 5 says Morgan Stanley described Nvidia and Broadcom as relatively insulated, while memory, optical and other secondary chip components could be hit by deployment delays.

How it compares

The 33 GW and 34% figures match the reports on Morgan Stanley's analysis. 'About a third of forecast chip-sales demand' is a loose paraphrase. The 34% is of the incremental power needed to energize projected chip deployments, not of chip sales, and it is a US data-center figure for deployments through 2028.

'Semiconductors being produced already exceed the power available' is a stronger statement than the sources read. They describe a projected shortfall through 2028 after counting data centers under construction and available grid capacity, not a present surplus of chips.

The note says 'this week'. The Morgan Stanley report is dated September 21 and a follow-up summary is dated October 5, so the date is not exact in the sources read. 'The bottleneck is now megawatts, not silicon' is the author's line, and the Substack summary argues cheaper compute widens the power gap.
