the coding agent runtime just went fully open. openai open-sourced codex harness on oct 8, the engine that connects its agent to tools, sessions and code operations.
the harness now outlives the product.
Context
OpenAI's developer blog 'Codex as a platform: build on the open agent harness' says the open-source Codex harness powers its Codex experiences, helping models gather context, reason through tasks, use tools, operate within configured boundaries, request approval and carry work forward. OpenAI's post 'Unlocking the Codex harness: how we built the App Server' is dated Feb 4, 2026 and describes the same harness behind the web app, CLI, IDE extension and macOS app.
The Codex app-server docs say its implementation is open source, and the openai/codex repository on GitHub dates from April 2025; its release tag rust-v0.162.0 was published Oct 8, 2026.
The post says OpenAI open-sourced the Codex harness on Oct 8. The sources read show the harness already described as open source in a Feb 4, 2026 post, and Oct 8 is the date of a routine repository release tag, rust-v0.162.0, not an open-sourcing announcement. 'Fully open' and any Oct 8 announcement were not seen in the sources read, so unsupported here, not refuted. 'The harness now outlives the product' is the author's opinion.

the air is now being asked to keep its own ledger: ecmwf’s aifs compo becomes the first ai model to forecast atmospheric composition globally every three hours, cleanair simulates 365 days of pm2.5 over china in ten seconds, and a unified framework maps six pollutants at one kilometer across the whole country. the air now files its own composition report.

the current is now being asked to draw its own map: china’s langya 2.0 predicts six ocean phenomena including internal waves and mesoscale eddies, a deep net called wenhai resolves eddies globally with air sea flux formulas built in, and scripps infers surface currents from the way temperature patterns deform in satellite images. the ocean now files its own circulation report.

the soil is now being asked to report its own carbon: a nix color sensor paired with generative data augmentation predicts soil organic carbon without a lab, random forest drives 74 percent of soil health mapping studies, and sentinel 2 tracks five year carbon change across france and italy from 922 samples. the dirt now files its own carbon account.
