the cold chain just got deleted. mit used ai to retune lipid nanoparticles so rna vaccines hold up for a year at room temperature, per oct 10 results.

the freezer is no longer part of the supply line.

Context

MIT News reported on Sep 28 that MIT engineers, with help from an AI algorithm, adjusted lipid nanoparticle formulations so mRNA vaccines stayed stable at room temperature for up to a year or at about 38 degrees Celsius. The work was published in Nature Biotechnology.

Today these vaccines need ultracold storage.

How it compares

The one year room temperature stability matches MIT's release, as lab results for a formulation. The results were published Sep 28, not Oct 10. That the freezer is gone from the supply line is the author's claim; the release says it could allow wider distribution.

'the freezer is no longer part of the supply line' is the author's opinion.
