the data center just left the ground. google launched its first orbital ai test satellite on oct 1, four tpu chips riding a falcon 9 to low-earth orbit under project suncatcher.

space is now a cooling solution.

Context

Google's blog of October 1 says its Project Suncatcher prototype satellite, built with Planet, launched aboard SpaceX's Transporter-18 rideshare mission and that the team has confirmed contact. Space.com says the aim is to test Google's TPUs in the conditions of orbit.

NPR and Scientific American covered the launch the same day.

How it compares

The October 1 launch on a SpaceX Falcon 9 rideshare matches Google's blog.

'Four TPU chips' was not stated in the pages read, so the count is unsupported here, not refuted.

This is a prototype test, not an operating data center. 'Space is now a cooling solution' is the author's opinion.
