the federal government just renamed an entire field. executive order 14434, signed sep 29, tells us agencies to write 'super intelligence' instead of 'ai' in official documents, with a legislative definition due in 60 days.
regulation by vocabulary is the fastest policy lever there is.
Context
Executive Order 14434, signed September 29 and published in the Federal Register on October 2, is titled Inaugurating the Era of Super Intelligence. Section 2 tells executive departments and agencies to use 'Super Intelligence' and 'SI' in place of 'Artificial Intelligence' and 'AI' in official correspondence, public communications, websites, reports and policy documents.
Section 3 sets the working definition to the existing statutory meaning of artificial intelligence in 15 U.S.C. 9401(3), and gives the Assistant to the President for Science and Technology 60 days to send the President proposed legislative language for a federal definition.
The order applies 'to the maximum extent permitted by law' and to non-statutory documents within the executive branch. It does not require altering earlier regulations, contracts, grants or historical documents.
Until the 60-day proposal and any act of Congress, the legal definition stays the existing AI definition. So the field is renamed in agency wording, not in statute.
'Fastest policy lever' is the author's opinion.
