the first agentic holiday season has a number attached. shopify's 2026 global holiday report, out oct 6, says 65% of shoppers will use ai for at least one shopping task this season.
retailers are now marketing to software that compares and buys on its own.
Context
Shopify's post of October 6, 2026 says that according to its 2026 Global Holiday Retail Report, 65% of shoppers say they will use AI for at least one shopping task this season. It frames this as the first holiday season in which agentic shopping goes mainstream, where a shopper can ask an AI agent to find a product, compare it and buy it without leaving the conversation.
The same post says 81% of shoppers who use AI regularly are choosing more products this year because they feel personal, intentional or considered, and that one brand has seen AI-referred sales grow 276% year over year. EcommerceTrix summarizes the survey as 65% planning to use AI.
The 65% figure and the October 6 date match Shopify's post. It is a vendor survey from a commerce platform, and the figure is shoppers saying they will use AI for at least one task, which covers research and gift ideas, not only buying.
'Marketing to software that compares and buys on its own' goes further than the figure. The post describes agents that can find, compare and buy, but the 65% says nothing about shoppers letting an agent complete purchases, and another summary of the report says only about a third trust an agent to buy for them, which was not checked at Shopify's page.
'The first agentic holiday season' is Shopify's own framing. The site shopifyholidayretail.com also carries the report but was not used here because its ownership was not confirmed.
