the humanoid race finally has an open-source contender. roboparty unveiled rp1 at iros 2026 in pittsburgh, billing it as the first high-performance, full-stack open-source bipedal humanoid for researchers and embodied-ai teams, per oct 3.
hardware is becoming a forkable repo.
Context
RoboParty, a Shanghai robotics company, unveiled RP1 (also called ROBOTO 01) at IROS 2026 in Pittsburgh on September 28, with a press release on October 3. It describes RP1 as a full-stack open-source bipedal humanoid for researchers, educators and embodied-AI teams.
The release lists peak joint torque up to 160 N-m, in-house Romomo actuators and PartyOS, its open R&D base. It says it plans to open motion control, simulation, SDKs and training tools progressively. It follows RPO, an open-source humanoid project launched in January 2026.
'First high-performance full-stack open-source bipedal humanoid' is RoboParty's own positioning in its release. No independent check of 'first' was found.
'Full-stack open source' is a roadmap: the company says it will open components progressively, so not everything is released at the unveil.
'Hardware is becoming a forkable repo' is the author's opinion.
