the ide just got parallel agent sessions. jetbrains opened air inside its ides on oct 1, running several agent sessions at once, with free junie lite for the no-subscription crowd.

the editor is now a cockpit.

Context

JetBrains announced on Oct 1, 2026 an Early Access Program for Air in JetBrains IDEs, available as a plugin on JetBrains Marketplace or natively in the 2026.3 EAP builds. Air runs coding agents across multiple projects with one place to track and review their work.

Junie Lite is a free model tier for Junie, announced Oct 2 and available in Air and Junie CLI.

How it compares

The Oct 1 date, the early access status and the parallel agent runs match the sources. 'Opened' means early access, not general release. The sources differ on the free tier: the Air page says free Junie Lite runs for a limited time, while the Junie page says Junie Lite is included with every JetBrains account with no countdown. Which applies to the Air plugin was not seen in the excerpts read, so unsupported here, not refuted.

'the editor is now a cockpit' is the author's opinion.
