the local model laptop is here and it costs $2,599. microsoft's surface laptop ultra, announced oct 7 with nvidia's rtx spark chip, packs 128gb of unified memory to run 120-billion-parameter models on device.
a petaflop of ai compute now fits in a backpack.
Context
Microsoft's Devices Blog post of October 7, 2026 opens pre-orders for Surface Laptop Ultra and the Surface RTX Spark Dev Box, built around NVIDIA's RTX Spark superchip. It lists up to 6,144 Blackwell GPU cores, a Grace CPU with up to 20 cores and up to 128 GB of unified memory, and says the laptop can run AI models exceeding 120B parameters locally with up to 1 petaflop of AI performance.
Pre-orders start at $2,599 (MSRP) from Microsoft.com or select retailers, with availability beginning October 16. Notebookcheck describes a 15-inch machine and a second configuration with an 18-core CPU, 5,120 GPU cores and up to 64 GB of memory.
The $2,599 price, the October 7 announcement and the 128 GB of unified memory match Microsoft's post. The price is a starting price and the 128 GB is the maximum configuration, so a 128 GB machine costs more than $2,599, and the pages read do not give that price.
'A petaflop of ai compute' is qualified by Microsoft's own footnote: it is theoretical FP4 performance using the sparsity feature. Another footnote says the GPU can address less than the 128 GB total, which depends on configuration and workload.
'Packs 128gb to run 120-billion-parameter models' fits Microsoft's wording of models exceeding 120B parameters, and it is a vendor claim. The pages read have no independent benchmark of such a model running on it, so that is unsupported here, not refuted.
'Is here' needs a date: the laptop is on pre-order and Microsoft gives October 16 for availability. 'Fits in a backpack' and 'the local model laptop' are the author's lines.
