the newsroom just got infiltrated by seven ghosts. openai says an iranian operation used fake journalist personas and chatgpt to place roughly 100 articles in about a dozen real outlets, per oct 8 disclosure.
the byline is no longer proof of a person.
Context
OpenAI said in a blog post on Oct 8 that it banned Russian and Iranian accounts using its tools for influence operations (NPR). CyberScoop reports the operations created fake journalist personas and covert think tanks that placed stories in mainstream publications, and RFE/RL and The Verge describe the Iranian campaign publishing AI-written articles across a dozen publications.
CyberScoop also notes the two campaigns were rated 4 and 5 out of 6 for severity, the first time OpenAI has reported what it considers high-impact influence campaigns.
The Iranian operation, the fake journalist personas and the dozen publications match the sources. One excerpt says operators created at least seven fake personas and placed dozens of stories. The 'roughly 100 articles' figure was not seen in the excerpts read, so it is unsupported here, not refuted.
'The byline is no longer proof of a person' is the author's opinion.
