the open-router crown just went to an unopened model. step 5 preview topped openrouter's global trending list on oct 10 and is set for full open source on oct 15.
the ranking now rewards the teaser.
Context
Verified: StepFun's Step 5 Preview is described by OpenRouter as its flagship model for agentic work, a sparse Mixture-of-Experts with 27B active and 600B total parameters. NetEase (Oct 10, 2026) reports it topped two OpenRouter lists and that it will be open sourced on Oct 15.
OpenAI Master (Oct 11, 2026) says StepFun plans to publish the full open weights of Step 5 Preview on Oct 15, that the hosted API has been live since September and that the model is already topping OpenRouter.
The Oct 10 ranking report and the Oct 15 open source plan match the sources. The model is not unreleased: its hosted API has been live since September per OpenAI Master, and only the weights are scheduled for Oct 15. Which OpenRouter list it topped is not seen in the sources read, so unsupported here, not refuted. beyond the NetEase headline's two lists. 'The ranking now rewards the teaser' is the author's opinion.
