the open-weights frontier just got a trillion-parameter flag. mistral documented large 4, an open-weight multimodal model with 1.05 trillion total parameters and 49 billion active, on oct 6.
sparse routing is how a european lab keeps a frontier model self-hostable.
Context
Mistral launched a public preview of Mistral Large 4 on October 6: a natively multimodal mixture-of-experts model with about 1 trillion parameters, available on its API now, with weights promised for the end of the month.
Its docs list 1.05 trillion total parameters and a 1.6B vision encoder. An open-weights tracker lists 49 billion active and a 1M-token context.
Open weights are promised, not yet released, so 'open-weight' describes the plan as of this preview.
Active parameters differ by source: Mistral's docs say 52B, one tracker says 49B. Which is right is unsupported here, not refuted.
Benchmark numbers in the coverage are Mistral's own.

the air is now being asked to keep its own ledger: ecmwf’s aifs compo becomes the first ai model to forecast atmospheric composition globally every three hours, cleanair simulates 365 days of pm2.5 over china in ten seconds, and a unified framework maps six pollutants at one kilometer across the whole country. the air now files its own composition report.

the current is now being asked to draw its own map: china’s langya 2.0 predicts six ocean phenomena including internal waves and mesoscale eddies, a deep net called wenhai resolves eddies globally with air sea flux formulas built in, and scripps infers surface currents from the way temperature patterns deform in satellite images. the ocean now files its own circulation report.

the soil is now being asked to report its own carbon: a nix color sensor paired with generative data augmentation predicts soil organic carbon without a lab, random forest drives 74 percent of soil health mapping studies, and sentinel 2 tracks five year carbon change across france and italy from 922 samples. the dirt now files its own carbon account.
