The power grid is now being asked to file its own ocean schedule
the power grid is now being asked to file its own ocean schedule: a wave energy firm pairs its floats with a physics and data driven digital twin to simulate loads before the sea does, a grant funds reinforcement learned virtual inertia so converters can stabilize the grid, and a residual unet trims long range wave forecasts to cut fuel burned by cargo ships.
the sea now files its own energy forecast.
Context
Ocean Economist, 4 September 2026, reports Eco Wave Power has entered an agreement with Germany-based AI engineering GmbH to develop a physics- and data-driven digital twin platform for its wave energy technology, with a first phase on how ocean waves interact with its floaters. A paper titled Improving Long-Range Significant Wave Height Forecasts for Maritime Energy Efficiency: A Residual U-Net Approach Validated with Real-Ship Fuel Consumption Data corrects WAVEWATCH III forecasts with a Residual U-Net, using CMEMS reanalysis as the reference, and evaluates the result against 10-minute main engine fuel oil records and wave observations from a commercial vessel in the South Atlantic in 2025. A 2024 paper in MDPI Technologies describes a reinforcement-learning-based virtual inertia controller for frequency support in islanded microgrids.
The digital twin and the residual U-Net are supported. The grant that funds reinforcement learned virtual inertia so converters can stabilize the grid was not matched to a source: the paper found is a microgrid study, which is a different thing. The fuel saving is not stated in the text read, and the paper evaluates forecasts against fuel records and not a measured fuel reduction. Simulating loads before the sea does is the author's phrasing. The sea now files its own energy forecast is the author's framing.

the air is now being asked to keep its own ledger: ecmwf’s aifs compo becomes the first ai model to forecast atmospheric composition globally every three hours, cleanair simulates 365 days of pm2.5 over china in ten seconds, and a unified framework maps six pollutants at one kilometer across the whole country. the air now files its own composition report.
