the recruiter just delegated first. shrm's state of ai in hr 2026 finds 43 percent of organizations used ai for hr work in 2025, up from 26 percent the year before, and they pointed it at hiring first.
screening is now the ai's first job.
Context
SHRM's State of AI in HR 2026 report is cited in September coverage. One summary says 39 percent of organizations have adopted AI somewhere in HR and that 56 percent of those do not formally measure whether it works.
A separate SHRM survey, from 2025 Talent Trends with 2,040 US HR professionals, reported AI use for HR tasks at 43 percent in 2025, up from 26 percent in 2024.
The 43 and 26 percent figures are from SHRM's 2025 Talent Trends survey of HR professionals, not from the State of AI in HR 2026 report, which gives 39 percent of organizations. Two different studies are joined in the post.
'Pointed it at hiring first' is close: one summary of the 2026 report puts recruiting as the most common HR area at 27 percent of HR professionals surveyed.
'Screening is now the AI's first job' is the author's opinion.
