the runtime rewrite just shipped in fourteen weeks. github moved 800,000 lines of copilot code from typescript to rust in 14.5 weeks with ai assistance, 128 pull requests, and zero downtime.

the migration itself was the demo.

Context

GitHub's engineering blog, by Stephen Toub on Sep 16, 2026, describes porting the Copilot agent runtime, which backs Copilot CLI, the Copilot App and the SDK, from TypeScript on Node.js to 800,000 lines of production Rust, using Copilot agents. Rustify and Musthave.AI report 128 pull requests, and Rustify says an in-process session start fell from 5.25 seconds to 55.3 milliseconds on GitHub's measured workload.

InfoQ covered the migration on Oct 9, 2026.

How it compares

The 800,000 lines of Rust, the AI-assisted rewrite and the 128 pull requests match the sources. The blog is dated Sep 16, so the post's timing is a framing, not the announcement date. The 14.5 weeks and the zero downtime were not seen in the excerpts read, so unsupported here, not refuted.

'the migration itself was the demo' is the author's opinion.
