The salinity is now being asked to file its own profile

Yethikrishna ROriginal on Threads

the salinity is now being asked to file its own profile: an attention enhanced network reconstructs daily temperature and salinity fields down to two thousand meters from surface signals, a global retrieval model reaches a correlation of 0.85 with measurements and cuts the error to 0.74 practical salinity units, and a purely data driven model matches ocean reanalysis systems on subsurface profiles.

the ocean now files its own salt ledger.

Context

The attention enhanced network in the note matches an Earth System Science Data paper on an attention enhanced 3D-U-Net++ for ocean temperature and salinity reconstruction. It reconstructs daily fields in 26 layers at quarter degree resolution from 5 to 2000 m depth, using real-time sea surface temperature and sea surface height.

A separate study reconstructs three-dimensional ocean states from extremely sparse surface data with a denoising diffusion model, using up to 99.9 percent sparse observations.

How it compares

The correlation of 0.85 and error of 0.74 psu for the global retrieval model are not confirmed here, and neither is the claim that a purely data driven model matches reanalysis systems.
