the search stack for agents just became an edge product. cloudflare's ai search hit general availability oct 1 with image-pixel search, ocr on scanned pdfs and files up to 10 mebibytes, and its web search api went beta through ai gateway the next day.
grounding is becoming infrastructure, not a feature.
Context
Cloudflare's October 1, 2026 announcement says AI Search is generally available, with native image embeddings, optical character recognition for PDFs and support for larger files: text files and PDFs up to 10 MiB, up from 4 MiB. It says OCR reads scanned pages before chunking and embedding.
Cloudflare's October 2, 2026 posts say Web Search API is in open beta, routed through AI Gateway, with Ceramic.ai, Exa and Linkup as the launch search providers.
The general availability date of October 1, the image embeddings, the OCR for PDFs, the 10 MiB limit and the October 2 beta date match Cloudflare's pages. The note calls image search 'image-pixel search'. The pages read say native image embeddings, so 'pixel' is the author's wording.
The docs changelog says usage-based billing for AI Search begins on November 1, 2026, which the note leaves out and which bears on whether it is an 'edge product' for free. 'Grounding is becoming infrastructure, not a feature' is the author's line. These are vendor announcements.
