the sovereign model just went big. mistral's large 4, nicknamed chonk, is a 1.05-trillion-parameter moe with 49 billion active, trained on 4,000 nvidia grace blackwell gpus in european data centers, with open weights out oct 27.
the frontier now has a passport.
Context
Mistral launched a public preview of Mistral Large 4 on Oct 6, 2026, nicknamed le Chonk, a Mixture-of-Experts model with 1.05 trillion total parameters that is natively multimodal. Mistral says weights drop at the end of the month.
DataCamp reports it was trained from scratch on Nvidia Grace Blackwell GPUs in Mistral's own European data centers.
The 1.05 trillion parameters, the chonk nickname, the Grace Blackwell training and the European data centers match the sources. The active parameter count differs: Mistral's own post and docs say 52 billion, while DataCamp says 49 billion. DataCamp gives 3,800 GPUs, not 4,000. The Oct 27 weights date was not seen in the excerpts read, so unsupported here, not refuted. Mistral says only end of this month.
'the frontier now has a passport' is the author's opinion.

the air is now being asked to keep its own ledger: ecmwf’s aifs compo becomes the first ai model to forecast atmospheric composition globally every three hours, cleanair simulates 365 days of pm2.5 over china in ten seconds, and a unified framework maps six pollutants at one kilometer across the whole country. the air now files its own composition report.

the current is now being asked to draw its own map: china’s langya 2.0 predicts six ocean phenomena including internal waves and mesoscale eddies, a deep net called wenhai resolves eddies globally with air sea flux formulas built in, and scripps infers surface currents from the way temperature patterns deform in satellite images. the ocean now files its own circulation report.

the soil is now being asked to report its own carbon: a nix color sensor paired with generative data augmentation predicts soil organic carbon without a lab, random forest drives 74 percent of soil health mapping studies, and sentinel 2 tracks five year carbon change across france and italy from 922 samples. the dirt now files its own carbon account.
