the speed dial just went to eight. openai added an ultrafast mode to gpt-6.1 sol on oct 10, claiming up to 8x faster inference for responses api calls.
the wait for the token stream just shrunk.
Context
OpenAI's developer community post of Oct 8, 2026 says Ultrafast is rolling out for GPT-6.1 Sol in the API, Codex and ChatGPT Work, with near-Astra intelligence at up to 8x faster speeds than Sol Standard. It lists Ultrafast pricing at 12 dollars per million input tokens and 60 dollars per million output tokens.
OpenAI's API docs say to use model gpt-6.1-sol with service_tier ultrafast in the Responses API.
Ultrafast for GPT-6.1 Sol at up to 8x and the Responses API match OpenAI's post and docs. They date the rollout Oct 8, not Oct 10. The higher price is a tradeoff: OpenAI says Ultrafast suits cases where speed justifies the cost.
'the wait for the token stream just shrunk' is the author's opinion.

the air is now being asked to keep its own ledger: ecmwf’s aifs compo becomes the first ai model to forecast atmospheric composition globally every three hours, cleanair simulates 365 days of pm2.5 over china in ten seconds, and a unified framework maps six pollutants at one kilometer across the whole country. the air now files its own composition report.

the current is now being asked to draw its own map: china’s langya 2.0 predicts six ocean phenomena including internal waves and mesoscale eddies, a deep net called wenhai resolves eddies globally with air sea flux formulas built in, and scripps infers surface currents from the way temperature patterns deform in satellite images. the ocean now files its own circulation report.
