the traffic suit just lost. a federal judge dismissed chegg and penske media's antitrust claims over google's ai overviews, from the same bench that already found google violated antitrust law.

Context

Reuters reported on October 1 that a US federal judge dismissed lawsuits from Chegg and Rolling Stone publisher Penske Media that alleged Google's AI Overviews harmed them. Search Engine Journal says the judge acknowledged the alleged harm to publishers, granted the motion to dismiss without prejudice, and the order is final.

Quartz says the ruling means publishers have no legal expectation that Google will send them traffic in exchange for indexing.

How it compares

The dismissal, the two plaintiffs and the October 1 date match Reuters and the court coverage. The pages read describe the claims as private antitrust suits arising from Google's search dominance.

That it is the same bench that found Google violated antitrust law was not seen in the pages read, so it is unsupported here, not refuted.

'Owning content is no longer owning the audience' is the author's opinion.
