The vent is now being asked to file its own chemistry report

Yethikrishna ROriginal on Threads

the vent is now being asked to file its own chemistry report: an autonomous vehicle fuses acoustic sensing with onboard dna sequencing to detect microbial blooms in real time and learns its sampling route by reinforcement, a plume tracing algorithm lets a robot find vents and cold seeps from water column signatures alone, and the first deployment of a new mapping vehicle located two vent fields in a single cruise.

the abyss now files its own plume log.

Context

Ocean Science and Technology of 15 July 2026 reports that Schmidt Ocean Institute's new AUV, The Childlike Empress, completed its first scientific mission on a 35-day Falkor (too) expedition, mapping nearly 147 square kilometers of Atlantic seafloor and supporting the discovery of two previously unknown hydrothermal vent fields in the Doldrums Megatransform and Fracture Zone. NOAA Ocean Exploration's page on a September 2024 expedition off American Samoa describes a project to develop a fully autonomous algorithm for AUVs, here the vehicle Sentry, to trace water column signatures of hydrothermal vents and cold seeps using real-time data from onboard sensors.

How it compares

The two vent fields and the new mapping vehicle come from the 2026 report. The plume tracing work is a different, earlier project described by NOAA and is a development effort, not a finished result. The vehicle fusing acoustic sensing with onboard DNA sequencing and learning its route by reinforcement was not found in any source read, so that part of the post is unverified. Whether the vent fields were found in a single cruise follows the 35-day expedition description. The abyss line is the author's.
