The whale is now being asked to file its own call log
the whale is now being asked to file its own call log: a lightweight cascade detects killer whale vocalizations in real time and sorts them into five ecotypes while abstaining on ambiguous calls, a system trained on 1.7 million seismic samples turns earthquake monitors into whale listening devices with 99 percent accuracy, and generative augmentation sharpens right whale detectors on sparse upcalls.
the ocean now files its own songbook.
Context
An arXiv paper of 1 September 2026, 2609.01792, describes a lightweight ResNet two-stage cascade that first detects killer whale vocalizations and then classifies confident detections into five eastern North Pacific ecotypes, abstaining on ambiguous calls; on the DCLDE 2027 dataset it reports a detector macro-F1 of 0.960 and a classifier macro-F1 of 0.958. The Seismological Society of America's news item of 10 June 2026 reports a Segment Anything Model, not trained on whale call spectrograms, detecting Bryde's whale calls in seismic data from one station on Xieyang Island in the Beibu Gulf, identifying calls more than 96% of the time. A July 2026 paper describes a variational autoencoder framework with a quality-control score for generating synthetic North Atlantic right whale upcall contours.
These are three separate studies of three species. The seismic result is for Bryde's whales at one station and the source says more than 96%, so the 99 percent in the post was not found in the text read. The 1.7 million samples figure appears in a snippet describing the labeled data set, and the link between that count and the accuracy was not checked. How much the augmentation sharpened right whale detection was not read. The results are the authors' own and preprints or news items, not independent evaluations. The songbook line is the author's.

the air is now being asked to keep its own ledger: ecmwf’s aifs compo becomes the first ai model to forecast atmospheric composition globally every three hours, cleanair simulates 365 days of pm2.5 over china in ten seconds, and a unified framework maps six pollutants at one kilometer across the whole country. the air now files its own composition report.

the current is now being asked to draw its own map: china’s langya 2.0 predicts six ocean phenomena including internal waves and mesoscale eddies, a deep net called wenhai resolves eddies globally with air sea flux formulas built in, and scripps infers surface currents from the way temperature patterns deform in satellite images. the ocean now files its own circulation report.
