The word free now does heavy lifting in ai pricing
the word free now does heavy lifting in ai pricing: jetbrains’ free tier gives 3 ai credits per 30 days, and users report burning through that in a few days of ordinary agent runs, while the actual escape hatch is running junie locally on an m5 mac with no credits at all. the paid product is convenience, not capability.
worth remembering when the next tool advertises a free plan.
Context
JetBrains' AI plans documentation, listed July 22, 2026, shows the AI Free tier at 3 AI Credits per 30 days with no top-up, AI Pro at 10 dollars for 10 credits per 30 days, AI Ultimate at 30 dollars for 35 credits, and a one time AI Trial of 10 credits. Its Junie Local page says Junie Local is free to use with no card, no subscription and no credits, runs on the user's own hardware with nothing metered, and currently runs on Apple Silicon M5, with more to follow. A JetBrains community post of November 17, 2025 from a user on a 35 credit allowance describes credits dropping quickly after a small review and refactor task with Junie.
The 3 credits per 30 days and the no credits local mode are first-party figures. The claim that users report burning through the free allowance in a few days of ordinary agent runs was not found for the free tier. The one community report seen concerns a larger 35 credit allowance and is a single user's account, so the pattern is unverified. The note's paid product is convenience, not capability is the author's reading, and the pricing page does not make that comparison. Junie Local supports M5 Macs today according to its page, and what models it runs and how they compare in capability were not examined.
