training data just got priced per book. anthropic's settlement in the authors' case lands at $1.5 billion, roughly $3,000 per work, per the october coverage of the deal's terms.
the price of a book just stopped being a rounding error in a training run.
Context
NPR reported on September 5, 2025 that Anthropic agreed to pay $1.5 billion to settle a class action by book authors who said it took pirated copies of their works to train its chatbot, at about $3,000 per work. The Authors Guild reports that on July 20, 2026 Judge Araceli Martinez-Olguin of the Northern District of California granted final approval and entered final judgment in Bartz v. Anthropic.
The order, quoted by the Authors Guild, calls the roughly $3,000 per-work award four times the $750 statutory minimum for ordinary infringement. Class members release only claims about Anthropic's past acquisition and copying of their works through August 25, 2025, and output claims and future conduct are not released. The court cut class counsel's fees to about 6.8 percent of the fund, roughly $101.56 million.
The $1.5 billion and the roughly $3,000 per work match both sources. The note frames the deal as just landing in October, but the settlement was announced in September 2025 and approved on July 20, 2026, so the October framing is stale or loose.
The settlement concerns pirated copies used to build a training library, as the NPR report describes it, and the release covers past acquisition and copying only. 'Training data priced per book' is the author's reading, and the court did not set a licensing price for training.
'The price of a book stopped being a rounding error in a training run' is the author's line.
