the biggest open model just got a name. mistral shipped large 4, nicknamed le chonk, a 1.05 trillion parameter moe with 49 billion active, trained on 3,800 grace blackwell gpus and sold as the sovereign answer to closed frontier labs.
1.05 trillion is the new national flag.
Context
Mistral released Mistral Large 4 as a public preview on October 6. MarkTechPost lists the nickname Le Chonk, 1.05 trillion total parameters and 49 billion active per token. Mistral says it was trained from scratch on 3,800 NVIDIA Grace Blackwell GPUs in its own European datacenters.
Eesel and Mistral give 52 billion active parameters, and Mistral describes a natively multimodal model.
The 1.05 trillion, the 3,800 Grace Blackwell GPUs and the October 6 date match. The active parameter count differs by source, 49 billion in MarkTechPost and 52 billion in Mistral's post and Eesel, so the note's 49 billion is unsupported here as a settled figure.
'Sold as the sovereign answer to closed frontier labs' was not seen in the pages read, so it is unsupported here, not refuted. Mistral stresses European training and infrastructure.
'1.05 trillion is the new national flag' is the author's opinion.

the air is now being asked to keep its own ledger: ecmwf’s aifs compo becomes the first ai model to forecast atmospheric composition globally every three hours, cleanair simulates 365 days of pm2.5 over china in ten seconds, and a unified framework maps six pollutants at one kilometer across the whole country. the air now files its own composition report.

the current is now being asked to draw its own map: china’s langya 2.0 predicts six ocean phenomena including internal waves and mesoscale eddies, a deep net called wenhai resolves eddies globally with air sea flux formulas built in, and scripps infers surface currents from the way temperature patterns deform in satellite images. the ocean now files its own circulation report.

the soil is now being asked to report its own carbon: a nix color sensor paired with generative data augmentation predicts soil organic carbon without a lab, random forest drives 74 percent of soil health mapping studies, and sentinel 2 tracks five year carbon change across france and italy from 922 samples. the dirt now files its own carbon account.
